Honduran Bishop Teodoro Gómez Rivera has died at 63 while traveling to Rome to meet Pope Leo XIV during an ad limina visit. The bishop of Choluteca died Monday during a stopover in Madrid. Gómez Rivera had led the diocese since 2023 and was vice president of the Honduran Bishops’ Conference. ACI Prensa, citing an unnamed Church source in Honduras, reported that he died from respiratory arrest and had diabetes. Spanish authorities are conducting an autopsy following his sudden death.

Bishop Johan Bonny of Antwerp, Belgium, is pressing ahead with his plan to ordain married men in 2028. Being the son of a physician, my father was frequently called out at mealtime to deal with emergencies. A priest must sacrifice and devote all his energies in serving God.
