Today in Paris, Pope Leo XIV linked France’s revolutionary motto - “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” [or death] - with the Gospel. Speaking to French civil authorities at the Élysée Palace, Leo XIV called the three principles “universal ethical imperatives” that “find in the Gospel message an inexhaustible source of inspiration and fulfillment.” The motto stems from the demonic French Revolution, which unleashed severe persecution of the Catholic Church. During the revolutionary period, clergy and religious were executed, imprisoned, deported or forced into exile, while churches and religious institutions were suppressed.

Trump avoids fake-news journalists, Leo XIV welcomes them. A CNN reporter questioned Leo XIV aboard today’s papal flight to Paris about President Trump barring CNN and other outlets he calls “fake news” from the White House. Leo avoided naming Trump or CNN. Instead, he stressed that all journalists are welcome to cover him. “I’m very happy that here, you are all welcome,” Leo said, adding that “good coverage” is “very important.”

Popular Catholic speaker, podcast host, and author Sister Miriam James Heidland, SOLT, announced on Sept. 21 that she is publicly discerning the establishment of a new religious community called Friends of the Bridegroom. “After several years of private discernment, I would like to announce to you with great reverence and care that, with the blessing of my religious community the Sisters of the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity (SOLT) and the Archbishop of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, his Excellency Jeffrey S. Grob, I am officially entering into a time of public discernment of the foundation of a new religious community, Friends of the Bridegroom,” Heidland wrote in a post on X.

As France moves toward legalising euthanasia, Leo XIV spoke about the unconditional value of human life. Speaking today at UNESCO in Paris, Leo XIV warned against a society that measures human worth by efficiency and casts aside those deemed no longer productive. “Our dignity is not destroyed by illness or suffering, nor is it dependent upon our abilities,” he said. Even in “the most vulnerable circumstances, even to death itself,” human dignity remains undiminished. The sick, suffering and dying, he said, must receive “loving care at every stage of life.”

On 4 November 1859, Sister Teresa Gesta, a Franciscan Tertiary in Foligno, Italy, died suddenly. Twelve days later, a sister in the convent reportedly heard agonised groans before Sister Teresa appeared through thick smoke. Saying, “Behold a proof of the mercy of God,” she pressed her hand against a door, leaving a dark, burned impression still preserved today. But the deeper message is not the handprint: Purgatory is God’s mercy—the final purification of those who die in His friendship before entering Heaven. It also reminds us of an ancient Christian duty: pray for the dead. Offer Masses, prayers and sacrifices, especially for forgotten souls. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.
