The Vatican remains committed "to persevere in dialogue" with China’s ruling elites. Archbishop Gallagher also appeared to blame the underground Church – which is suffering under the 2018 deal and already building its own episcopal hierarchy, not in communion with the Pope. The agreement “was never going to be accepted by certain people, given certain people’s view of the history of China and the government of mainland China today.”
Cardinal Joseph William Tobin of Newark will undergo surgery tomorrow to remove a kidney mass. The Archdiocese reports that tests suggest the mass is confined to the kidney, and doctors are optimistic.
